Ubuntu -> Arch Linux

I have now switched from Ubuntu to Arch Linux, mainly because of issues I have faced in the past with the 6 monthly upgrade cycle which came to a head with Karmic Koala causing me no end of grief.

Arch uses a rolling release model so I will no longer require big upgrades happening every so often, instead all updates will be incremental and therefore more managable.

All my existing packages, which I supported from Launchpad and therefore provided ppa packages for Ubuntu users to install, have now been successfully setup in the AUR. A post on this in the Arch Linux forums can be found here: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=85524

    Same reason I switched to arch from debian. Rolling release is so much nicer.

    • 6+ months on I’ll reply :)
      Rolling releases are the biz aren’t they…and the tools for package management are superb!

  1. Hi, I would like to know how is your life with Arch. I had some problems with Ubuntu’s big upgrades too so I wanna try something new.

    Regards

    • You did post some time ago, I didn’t realise I had to approve comments, I had set the site up too quickly :)
      See my comment below, it lists some of the qualities verses Ubuntu…if you haven’t already just install it! You wont regret it so long as you have an understanding about some of the linux basics I’d say, although you could get by with the wiki with no prior knowledge as it is excellent!

  2. Is this the only reason you switched?

    • Pretty much in the end that’s what did it, but I did have Arch in mind before then, for up-to-date packages and speed at the time :)

      In Ubuntu I had to install from source for a few things to get what I wanted which wasn’t a big deal but in Arch I can install more up-to-date binaries, find a PKGBUILD for something or make my own in the AUR so I never manually build something again…

      Ubuntu is a great distro for sure, it’s what kept me interested in Linux after quite a break from it because of it’s general ease of use. But I was ultimately drawn to Arch…still no regrets AT ALL.
